Kali Linux 2025.1a is officially here, bringing with it significant updates to desktop environments, Raspberry Pi support, NetHunter features, and a new security tool. Originally planned as Kali 2025.1, a last-minute bug required a quick rebuild, leading to the 2025.1a release.

What’s New in Kali Linux 2025.1a?

 

1. 2025 Theme Refresh

Each year’s first Kali release introduces a visual overhaul, and 2025.1a is no exception. This update includes:

  • Revamped boot menu, login screen, and desktop experience
  • New default wallpapers for both Kali and Kali Purple editions
  • Community wallpapers package update with new additions

2. New Tools & Updated Packages

Kali Linux continues expanding its security toolkit with:

  • hoaxshell– A Windows reverse shell payload generator using HTTPS for stealthy beacon-like communication
  • Kernel upgraded to 6.12
  • Numerous package updates for existing tools

3. Desktop Environment Updates

KDE Plasma 6.2

  • Upgraded from Plasma 5.27 to Plasma 6.2, a major leap forward
  • New floating panels feature for enhanced user experience

Xfce 4.20 (Kali’s default DE)

  • Upgraded from Xfce 4.18 → 4.20 (released Dec 15, 2024)
  • New keyboard shortcuts for improved workflow, including:
    • Super + T → Open Terminal
    • Super + E or Super + F → Open File Manager
    • Super + W → Open Browser
    • Window tiling shortcuts for better multi-monitor support

4. Raspberry Pi Support & Kernel Updates

Kali Linux 2025.1a introduces significant improvements for Raspberry Pi users:

  • New Kernel (6.6.74) with Raspberry Pi OS compatibility
  • Official support for Raspberry Pi 5
  • New kernel packages for different Pi models
  • Partition layout update:
    • /boot/firmware replaces /boot for firmware-related configs
    • Users must edit /boot/firmware/config.txt instead of /boot/config.txt

Upgrade Note:

  • Updating will not break existing installations running the 5.15 kernel, but starting fresh is recommended for full compatibility.

5. Kali NetHunter CAN: Car Hacking from Your Pocket

A new “CAN Arsenal” tab has been added to the NetHunter app, enabling car hacking on mobile devices.

  • New dynamic wallpaper system
  • New Samsung HID patch (working again since the Galaxy S7)
  • New kernel support for more devices:
    • Samsung Galaxy S9 (LineageOS 20, Android 13)
    • Samsung Galaxy S10 (LineageOS 21 & 22.1)
    • Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro (Android 11)

 




How to Get Kali Linux 2025.1a?

1. Fresh Install

Download the latest images from the official Kali website.

2. Upgrade from Existing Installation

Run the following commands:

 
echo "deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main contrib non-free non-free-firmware" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade
cp -vrbi /etc/skel/. ~/
[ -f /var/run/reboot-required ] && sudo reboot -f

After rebooting, verify the update:

grep VERSION /etc/os-release
uname -v
uname -r
